Our Mission

Professors' Press Box is an independent hockey publication dedicated to providing thoughtful analysis, commentary, and coverage of the NHL and the broader hockey world. Our team of writers brings academic rigor and deep passion for the game to every piece we publish.

We aim to offer readers insightful perspectives that go beyond surface-level reporting, combining statistical analysis with contextual understanding of the sport.

Editorial Independence

Professors' Press Box is independently owned and operated by its writers, who are co-owners of the publication. We are not owned by, affiliated with, or beholden to any NHL team, league entity, sports agency, or corporate parent company.

Our editorial decisions are made solely by our team based on newsworthiness, reader interest, and journalistic merit. No external party influences our coverage or editorial direction.

Content Types

We publish several types of content, and we strive to make the distinction clear to readers:

  • News: Factual reporting on events, transactions, and developments in hockey.
  • Analysis: In-depth examination of games, statistics, trends, and strategies, informed by data and expertise.
  • Opinion/Commentary: Clearly labeled pieces representing the views of individual authors.
  • Game Reviews: Post-game analysis combining factual recaps with analytical perspectives.

Opinion pieces reflect the views of their authors and not necessarily the views of Professors' Press Box as a whole.

Accuracy and Fact-Checking

We are committed to accuracy in all our reporting and analysis. Our standards include:

  • Verifying facts and statistics before publication
  • Using reliable primary sources whenever possible
  • Attributing information to its source
  • Distinguishing between confirmed facts and speculation
  • Clearly labeling rumors as such when reporting on unconfirmed developments

Sources

We rely on credible sources for our reporting, including:

  • Official NHL and team communications
  • Verified player and team social media accounts
  • Reputable sports news organizations
  • Official statistics from NHL.com and trusted analytics providers
  • Direct interviews and press conferences

When using anonymous sources, we do so sparingly and only when the information is newsworthy and cannot be obtained on the record.

Corrections Policy

We take errors seriously. When we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and transparently:

  • Minor corrections: Typos and small factual errors are corrected directly in the article.
  • Significant corrections: Material errors that affect the substance of a story are corrected with a note at the bottom of the article explaining what was changed and when.
  • Major corrections: Errors that fundamentally change the meaning of an article are noted prominently at the top of the piece.

If you believe we have made an error, please contact us and we will investigate promptly.

Conflicts of Interest

Our writers are expected to disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could affect their coverage. This includes:

  • Personal relationships with players, coaches, or team personnel
  • Financial interests in teams or related businesses
  • Any other relationship that could create bias or the appearance of bias

When conflicts exist, writers either recuse themselves from relevant coverage or disclose the conflict to readers.

Fan Perspective

Our writers are hockey fans, and we don't pretend otherwise. Many of our authors have favorite teams, and this passion informs our coverage. However, we maintain the following standards:

  • Analysis is based on facts and evidence, not rooting interest
  • We cover all teams fairly, including teams our writers may not personally support
  • When a writer's fandom is relevant to a piece, it may be acknowledged for transparency

Advertising and Sponsorship

Any advertising or sponsored content will be clearly distinguished from editorial content. We do not allow advertisers or sponsors to influence our editorial coverage. Sponsored content, if any, will be clearly labeled as such.

Attribution

We respect the work of other journalists and publications. When our reporting builds on the work of others, we provide appropriate attribution and links. We do not plagiarize or pass off others' work as our own.
